Jamaican Beef Patty is made with a flaky pie crust and a savory spicy beef filling. It will have your taste buds eating more than just one.

This authentic Jamaican Beef Patty Recipe is something that I have always wanted to make, but keep putting it off until now. It's about time I share this recipe with you all.

It looks like a hard process, but I promise you that it's not hard to do. You will be making these for your next house party.

What is Jamaican Beef Patty?

Jamaican Beef Patty is a meat pie with a flaky crust and well seasoned ground beef that is spicy if you choose to add that amount of spice to it.

This comfort food can be eaten for lunch, dinner or serve as an appetizer for an house party. It is the most fulfilling food you will ever taste. I have been eating this delicious food since I can remember.

It doesn't just comes only in a beef flavor, but comes in other flavors too. These flavors includes chicken, shrimp, lobster, soy, vegetables and my favorite cheese patty (a beef patty with cheese inside).

However, I don't get the luxury of just walking into a local bakery and order my favorite cheese patty. I wish there was a Beef patty delivery service that was near me.

The closest I come to getting one is from my local Dollar Tree Store or if I travel outside of my hometown and into another city that's 2 to 3 hours away, then I can get it from a popular bakery.

So therefore, I decided to start baking my own patty from scratch and I had no regret one bit. They are the closest I will get to all my childhood memories of eating these at my Elementary School. I hope you will make some too.

What goes well with Jamaican Beef Patties

While these Jamaican Beef Patties are perfect all by itself, it goes well with another favorite, Jamaican Coco Bread. Place a patty in the middle and that's when all the yumminess starts… the bread, the flaky crust and the spicy meat.

This combination is one of Jamaicans favorite comfort food.

Besides a Coco Bread, 2 slices of Hard-O Bread is the next best thing. But my favorite is a slice of cheese or two. I guess that's why there is a cheese beef patty back home.

What sauce goes with Jamaican Beef Patties

As a Jamaican, I have never dip my beef patties in a sauce. However, I can understand why others will want to dip it in a sauce.

  • Mango Jerk Sauce
  • Hot Sauce Dip
  • Thai Sweet Chili Sauce

How to make Jamaican Beef Patties

Making these Beef Patty is quite a process. I wouldn't say long but it takes some time. But trust me, the end results will be worth it.

Firstly, combine all the ingredients to make the dough. Wrap it in a piece of plastic wrap and put away in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

Secondly, season the lean ground beef with the onion powder, allspice, black pepper, ground ginger, garlic powder and complete seasoning. Set aside for a little.

Thirdly, sauté the onion, dried thyme, scallions (green onions), scotch bonnet pepper and garlic. Add the seasoned lean ground beef, cook until all the pink is gone. Then add the soya sauce and browning. Continue to stir.

Fourthly, add the breadcrumbs, curry powder, dried thyme (or fresh thyme), ketchup, salt, brown sugar and water. Then stir and cover with a lid to cook for about 10 minutes on low heat. Set aside to cool.

Fifthly, remove the dough from the fridge and cut it into two pieces. Roll the first piece out to about 1/8 inch with a rolling pin while the other piece chill in the refrigerator. Cut out circles that are about 5 to 6 inches.

Then scoop about 2 to 3 heaping tablespoons onto each circle. Dip your finger into some water and slightly moisten the edges of each circle. Then fold each circle in half and use a fork to crimp the edges.

Finally, brush each patty with some egg wash and bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 to 30 minutes. Repeat the same process for the second piece of dough.

However, if you are doing it in one baking time frame, then place the first set of patties in the fridge (without the egg wash), so it won't get to room temperature. Egg wash the first set and then bake all of them in one baking time frame.

Can you freeze Jamaican Beef Patties

Yes you can freeze these Spicy Jamaican Beef Patties. First, bake them as instructed in the recipe below and allow them to cool (room temperature).

Then place them on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze. Once they are frozen, place them in a freezer friendly container to freeze for about 3 months.

To reheat: place frozen patties on a baking sheet in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 20 minutes or until it is warm enough to your desire.

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 4 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 cup unsalted Butter (2 sticks)
  • 3/4 cup Water, cold
  • 1 teaspoon curry powder
  • 2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 Tablespoon Granulated Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

For the Meat Filling

  • 1 Pound Lean Ground Beef
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Allspice
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
  • 1 Tablespoon Complete Seasoning or All Purpose Seasoning
  • 2 clove of Garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon Vegetable Oil
  • 1/2 cup Onion, diced
  • 2 stalks Green Onion (Scallion), diced
  • 1/2 Roma Tomato, diced
  • 1 Scotch Bonnet Pepper, diced or 1 teaspoon or more Red Pepper Flakes, depending on how much spice you want.
  • 1 Tablespoon Soya Sauce
  • 2 teaspoon Grace Browning
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon Curry Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Thyme or 1 sprig of fresh Thyme
  • 2 Tablespoon Ketchup
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup Bread crumbs
  • pinch of Salt (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon Brown Sugar (optional)

For Brushing the Dough

  • 1 large Egg
  • 1 Tablespoon Water
  • 1/4 cup Water (for sealing)

Instructions

To make the dough

  1. In a large bowl, combine the curry powder, turmeric, salt, flour, butter and sugar and whisk together until it looks like small peas.
  2. Slowly pour the water in small amount at a time and mix together with your hand until it becomes a ball. To make this process easier, you can use a food processor instead of your hands.
  3. Wrap the dough with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or longer, while you make the meat filling.

To make the meat filling

  1. Season the lean ground beef with the ground ginger, allspice, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and complete seasoning. Set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the oil and sauté the onion, scotch bonnet pepper or red pepper flakes, tomato, scallions (green onions) and garlic for about 2 to 3 minutes. Please use gloves when cutting the scotch bonnet pepper.
  3. Add the seasoned lean ground beef to the sautéed vegetables and herbs. Use a wooden spoon to break it up and let it cook until it is no longer pink. Pour the soya sauce, browning and let it cook a little for about 3 minutes.
  4. Add the ketchup, curry powder, dried thyme, and bread crumbs and mix together. Pour the water, stir and cover with a lid. Allow to cook for about 10 minutes on low heat. Taste the mixture and adjust if it need more salt.
  5. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.

To assemble the Jamaican Beef Patty

  1. In a small bowl, whisk the two eggs and water together. Set aside for later.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
  3. Remove the dough from the fridge and divide into two parts. Put back the other half in the fridge to continue to chill.
  4. Flour your work station and your rolling pin. Roll out the 1st half of the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out circles that are about 5 to 6 inches or to your desired circle size.
  5. On one half of each circle, put about 2 to 3 heaping tablespoon of meat filling. Dip your finger in some water and slightly moisten the edges of each circle. Then fold over the other half and seal. Use a fork to crimp the edges.
  6. Place each patty on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Whisk the egg and water together to make the egg wash. Brush each patty with the egg wash.
  7. Or if you are baking all the patties in one baking time frame, then place the patties on the baking sheet in the refrigerator until the second set is ready without brushing them with the egg wash. This helps the dough not to get to room temperature. Then when the second set of patties are done assembling and it is baking time, brush all of the patties with the egg wash.
  8. Bake at 350 degree F for about 25 to 30 minutes.
  9. For the 2nd half of the dough, repeat the same process.
  10. Remove from oven once baked. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes:

  1. Do not over knead your dough if you are using your hands or else it will be less flaky.
  2. Please put on a pair of gloves when cutting the scotch bonnet pepper. It will help prevent skin burning.
  3. Make sure to allow the meat filling to become room temperature before adding it to the dough (each circle).
  4. If doing all the patties in one baking time frame, while doing the second part of the dough, place the first half in the refrigerator without the egg wash, so it doesn't get to room temperature.
  5. Also, while the oven heats up, leave the patties in the refrigerator. Then when it is baking time, brush with egg wash and bake.
